Another interesting week in the league, to say the very least. Both real and fantasy.
The big thing is that Donovan McNabb went out for the year with a sprained ACL. Always fragile, this deals PGia a very difficult and challenging blow to maintain his league. As of right now, his QBs are Bruce Gradkowski and David Carr. While this may not be as dramatically bad as some may think - remember, I won a championship in 2004 with Carr starting the majority of games - Donovan McNabb and his MVP-caliber performance were as much a reason why PGia had a lead. With him gone, this lead is in jeopardy.
Needless to say, this opens up the league considerably. Pete is still the favorite, but TONY, Craig, and Derek all have a shot at it.
Moves were plentiful this week among the contenders. First, Derek made a decent move this week with his Edgerrin for $5 trade to Tom (another classic this-year-for-next-year-trade).
Next Walt and Bruce gave Droughns and Griese to Greg for Trent Green and Mack Strong. Essentially the deal is Green for Droughns. I like the deal for Greg, Droughns is strong and at 22 a good keeper. However, keep in mind that, in Cleveland, no one's job is safe long term. For that, Walt and Bruce also get a nice upgrade at QB. Trent Green is solid but I wonder how much being in Herm Edwards' offense holds him back. I also wonder if Herm is going to have the short leash with Trent - certainly, the emotional bond connecting Trent Green andGreg Kinnear Dick Vermeil is just not there. But Trent is a pro, and somehow you have to figure he's going to put numbers up.
Greg then turned around and moved McNair, Steve Smith, Mewelde Moore and Priest Holmes to Craig for Jake the Snake, Michael Turner, LenDale White and Terry Glenn. I like this deal for Craig as well. McNair is great this year. Steve Smith, enough said; and Priest as it turns out had some value (more on that in a second). For Greg, as I said before Plummer has been great for the Broncos but for some reason Shanahan is sour on him. I do like both Glenn (great cheap receiver) and Michael Turner (great value for a backup). I also like Lendale White. In fact I think Lendale has a chance to be Laverneous Coles to Reggie Bush's Peter Warrick. Unfortunately, he is buried behind Travis Henry and Chris Brown. Apparently, having Norm Chow as your offensive coordinator only goes so far.
Lastly, Craig then flipped Priest Holmes to Tom for a one-year rental of Anthony Thomas. To me, this was the second-most interesting trade of the week. Does anyone know what Priest Holmes's future prospects are? Not a bad gamble.
Of the teams in the hunt, TONY and Craig have the best shots because they have the chits that everyone seems to want (Craig especially). Derek had a chit deficiency, and if he loses Colston for any extended period, that basically is his last major chit. Really, between him and Aaron Rodgers, Derek got killed yesterday with injuries as bad as anyone.
I do have one more thing to add: in 2003, I had a $35 Daunte Culpepper, who was widely considered one of the best guys in the league. Unfortunately my team was floundering. Needing a decent RB, I asked TONY for Rudi Johnson (10, 2 years left). He said no, but did offer Jake Plummer, Curtis Martin, and Corey Dillon, which I wound up taking (even though I really wanted Rudi J.) Unfortunately for me, Dillon lost his starting job right after that (this was the week he got into a car accident 90 minutes before game time), Jake Plummer was just eh, and Curtis Martin was solid but scored NO touchdowns. Meanwhile, Culpepper was off the chain All-World for TONY and Phil.
Now: this was a trade that everyone thought was pretty fair for both of us, and that I got fair value. And it was fair, and I do think I got fair value in the end. But, the end result did not work out for me - at least in 2003. I wound up finishing out of the money with only Curtis Martin to show for it. Not horrible, but not Daunte. The moral: it's not how much you get for your players, but that you get the right players.
BTW in a non-football note congratulations to Jimmie Johnson for winning the Sprint Nextel Cup for 2006. Kind of bummed that my boy Matt Kenseth didn't get it but he does have one from 2002. I do think the Chase format is a fantastic innovation though, perhaps the best sports-related innovation of the decade, so far.
